Buddhist Studies often employ fieldwork to understand Buddhism as a lived tradition, exploring doctrinal
discourse in actual practice, ritualistic aspects, social issues, and more. This course aims to train students in the
skills necessary for conducting qualitative research, i.e. fieldwork. Students will engage with both theoretical and
fieldwork-based Buddhist studies and will have opportunities to conduct their own fieldwork. The course will
primarily focus on ethnographic fieldwork methods but will also cover other aspects of qualitative research.
Students should expect to participate in fieldwork practice, which may take place off-campus. The dates and
locations for these practices will vary based on the class's progress.
